The Nokia N9 is getting a new color — white! This dazzling version of the N9 will be available before the end of the year and will debut with the 64GB version of the Phone. Here’s an excerpt from Nokia’s blog:

Frank Zillikens, who heads up the product marketing for Nokia N9, explains: “The manufacturing process for beautiful white products is quite complex and we wanted to make sure we deliver the best possible quality for our consumers.”

The white Nokia N9 sports a glossy finish, so it looks slightly different from its matte sisters in black, magenta and cyan.

There’s some doubt on whether the Nokia N9 is coming to America. A recent story by Engadget claims that a U.S. launch isn’t in the cards. The site received a PR reply from Nokia that stated:

After the very positive reception to the launch of the Nokia N9, the product is now being rolled out in countries around the world. At this time we will not be making it available in the US. Nokia takes a market by market approach to product rollout, and each country makes its own decisions about which products to introduce from those available.

The site is taking this to mean that the Nokia N9 will not be released in America at all. However, the statement could mean that a U.S. launch will take place after the N9 is available in other territories. One conspiracy theory floating around is that Microsoft doesn’t want the N9 available in America because it wants Nokia to focus on its Windows Phone products in the U.S.

This recently posted countdown page strongly suggest that the Nokia N9 is less than two months away! The countdown clock supports the rumors than the N9 will hit store shelves by the end of September. Hopefully the time is counting down to an actual release and not an announcement.

Foursquare co-founder Naveen Selvadurai talks about developing his popular location-based app for Nokia’s Symbian S40 platform and the upcoming N9 smartphone. The video above shows several clips of Foursquare running on prototype N9 devices. The S40 version promises tight integration with the excellent Nokia Maps product and I expect the same from the N9 version.

Foursquare is one of the most popular mobile apps across all platforms and it’s great to see that the N9 is getting some love from the company.

In case you missed it and want all the official details, here’s the press release for the Nokia N9.

Singapore – Nokia today announced the Nokia N9, built for people who appreciate a stunning blend of design and the latest smartphone technology. To learn more about the design of the Nokia N9 visit: http://swipe.nokia.com

One swipe and you’re home
The Nokia N9 introduces an innovative new design where the home key is replaced by a simple gesture: a swipe. Whenever you’re in an application, swiping from the edge of the display takes you home.

The three home views of the user interface are designed to give fast access to the most important things people do with a phone: using apps, staying up to date with notifications and social networks, and switching between activities.

The industrial design of the Nokia N9 is an example of extreme product making and craft. The body is precision-machined from a single piece of polycarbonate and flows seamlessly into beautiful curved glass. The laminated deep black display means that the user interface just floats on the surface of the product.

The Nokia N9 also packs the latest in camera, navigation and audio technology for a great all-round experience.

27 June 2011 News,Previews

On June 21, 2011 Nokia unveiled the N9, its first and last MeeGo-powered mobile-phone. As expected from Nokia, the N9 is a beautiful piece of hardware that blends impressive technology with gorgeous style. The big surprise was how elegant Nokia’s Harmattan skin looked. The company has been pushing Symbian for years, despite the operating system’s dated look and feel. It was almost shocking that the Harmattan-flavored version of MeeGo looked so intuitive, powerful, and flexible.

On the hardware side, the N9 features a 3.9-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 854×480. The screen is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass for extra durability. The N9 is powered by a 1GHz OMAP 3630 processor, which is based off of ARM Cortex A8 architecture. While that seems dated compared to the dual-core chips found in Android and iOS products, MeeGo doesn’t require as much power to run at a snappy rate. Apps, particularly games, are another matter and it will be interesting to see if the relatively modest processor limits the N9?s app potential.

The body of the N9 is made from a single piece of polycarbonate, which is a fancy word for expensive plastic. Nokia chose polycarbonate instead of metal or glass so as to avoid signal issues. I’m curious to see how the N9 feels compared to the luxurious N8, which uses an anodized aluminum casing. The phone packs an eight-megapixel camera with a Carl Zeiss lens. Nokia’s high-end phones feature the best mobile cameras in the world and I’m expecting great images from the N9.
